Receptionists are the first point of contact when a customer enters a business, including hotels, offices and leisure centres.
Although there are no set entry requirements, GCSE grades A*-C will help you gain a role front of house as well as experience, valued by employers which can be gain through volunteering, a Traineeship or an Apprenticeship.
You should have excellent communication skills as you will be working front of house and dealing with the public, have good organisational skills to keep on top of your workload and vast knowledge of the business to be able to answer enquires both in person and over the phone in a professional manner.
On a daily basis you will be required to meet and greet visitors and directing them to the correct place as well as ensuring all visitors sign in and out of the building. Some receptionists also take on the responsibility of booking hotels and travel for their employees as well as providing support. Other general duties may include carrying out any additional duties as required by your Head of Department, ensuring a high level of communication is maintained between other departments within the business, ensuring a high standard of appearance at all times and that you continue to hold a smart appearance as well as other employees.
As a starter, you should except to earn between £14,000 and £16,000 per year. With experience, you can earn up to £21,000 annually although this may differ between jobs depending on the role and nature of business.
Usually, you will only be expected to work normal office hours Monday-Friday. However, in specific sectors such as doctor surgeries or restaurants you may be expected to work in the evening and at weekends.
