A nurse’s responsibility is to care for those who are sick or injured.

A starter nurse can earn between £22,000 to £28,500 and up to £40,000 with experience. Highly experienced nurses can earn up to and over on average £41,000 as a consultant.

As a nurse you will be required to be emotionally strong, patient, a good communicator and have outstanding accuracy skills. Your daily tasks will include taking temperatures and blood pressures, assisting doctors in examinations, providing the correct drugs and injection to each patient, dressing wounds, ensuring the patient is comfortable and regularly checking their progress and advising relatives and patients.

Due to the nature of the job, you will be required to have a degree in nursing, already be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (the regulator of all nursing and midwifery careers within the UK) and clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (whom help employers make safer recruitment decisions). You be will required to pay for your course fees although may be able to gain NHS funding to help with your living expenses. Although most jobs are within the NHS, you could work in other hospital wards including nursing homes, private hospitals and visiting patients at home.

You will be required to work 38 hours a week including evenings, at the weekend, night shifts and on bank-holiday weekends. With experience, these hours may increase. You could progress onto the role as a nursing sister, ward manager or team leader. You could also train as a midwife, health visitor, district or practice nurse and managerial roles. With a masters qualification you could become an advanced nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist with the opportunity of becoming self-employed or working overseas.
