Sales assistants provide support to customers and sell products.

New sales assistants to the role can earn between £11,000 to £16,000 and up to £22,000 with experience. Those that have worked in the industry for a longer period of time can earn up to £25,000 in a managerial position.

As a sales assistant you will be responsible for serving customers, taking both cash and card payments, managing on-site stock, taking product returns and ensuring your allocated department is neatly arranged and are required to work up to 40 hours per week. This is likely to include evenings, at the weekend and bank holidays as well as after close.

Although there are no set entry requirements to become a sales assistant, it is useful if you are confident about the product(s) you are selling – whether its items of clothing or food produce, have a positive attitude and are willing to help all customers.

With experience you could become a store manager, departmental manager or specialise in customer services or merchandising. You could even set up and run your own shop!
