first-day-of-christmas
1st December 2016

A Software Developer, otherwise known as a Programmer, role is to design, put together and trial new and existing systems that are put in place to help businesses work more effectively.

Programmers can earn to £22,000 to £26,000 in a junior role, and up to £50,000 in experienced or managerial roles. Working 37-40 hours per week, depending on various deadlines, a software developers daily tasks may include liaising with clients and the team to discuss requirements, writing and changing computer code as and when required, testing the security and installing systems and reviewing test results to ensure the programme works correctly in a business’s favour whilst maintaining these systems once they have been fully installed.

As you will be working closely with business analysts and project managers, you are required to be able to understand and develop technical plans to adhere to what the clients need of the system as well as great project management skills to stay on top of your work load and meet important deadlines.

As a Junior Software Developer, your role will consist mainly of writing and developing code, working with your team manager to ensure it is completed to a high standard and follows the requirements as discussed prior to creation. Gaining new skills leads to the option of undertaking the role of a Software Engineer. You will gain the opportunity to create your own code and your involvement in each project will significantly increase as you will manage your own tasks. If you wish, you can progress as a Senior Software Engineer who are accountable for the development of each project and will write more complex code as well as providing advice and supporting team members to aid in development of their own projects. The best part? You don’t necessarily need to have a degree to work in programming, as long as you have the required knowledge needed to begin, you can learn while you work with the support of your colleagues.
