“I met the MyCareer team at a YMCA careers day in March. I was looking for work within the construction industry but lacked qualifications and experience, and was keen to find out about training courses that would help me build the skills I needed to get ahead.
“I was unemployed but not in receipt of benefits. The MyCareer team helped me to apply for the benefits I was entitled to, and once my claim became active I was able to access government-funded training courses. They booked me in for a one-week construction course and paid for my food and travel expenses while I completed the course and passed my CSCS card test.
“My adviser has been there for me every step of the way, helping to boost my confidence and develop the skills I’ll need to be successful in an interview and secure a job. I’ve now decided to explore further training options – possibly in Electrical Engineering – and together we’re working out my next steps.
“I’ve come such a long way with the support of the MyCareer team. I’d love to start my own property development business in the future and this is now beginning to feel achievable!”Jamie, 19, Romford
“When I was released from prison I simply had no motivation to find a job – I knew that my criminal record would put most employers off so I didn’t really see the point.
“My probation officer referred me to MyCareer, and I spoke to one of the advisers there who seemed really positive about helping me return to work as a chef. I decided to give it a go and took part in a 3-day employability course to help me develop job search and communication skills and work on my interview technique. I knew I could come across as overly confident and defensive in interviews, and my adviser gave me some useful tips on how to tone this down a little!
“I didn’t turn up to the first couple of interviews they arranged for me – I still thought that my criminal record would count against me. However the MyCareer team were so supportive and encouraging – they refused to give up on me and really helped me believe in myself. I kept going and soon got a job as a Commis Chef which is perfect for me! Now I really feel as though I’ve made a fresh start and look forward to becoming a fully qualified chef in the not-too-distant future.”Christopher, 23, London
